Internationally accepted, acknowledged, and widely known name of the Hungarian NREN (National Research and Education Network) is "HUNGARNET" - an acronym standing for:

          HUNGarian Academic and Research NETwork

The name HUNGARNET refers to the

Hungarian Academic and Research Networking Association (HUNGARNET Association)

and also to the

Research Network (ie. the information infrastructure) of the Hungarian academic and research community.

1. HUNGARNET Association

As a bottom-up, not for profit, voluntary, civil Association, HUNGARNET provides a forum for the entire research and education institutions as well as public collections (libraries, museums and archives) comprising the user communities of the Hungarian National Information Infrastructure Development (NIIF) Program. As such, the Association represents the interests of its organisational and individual members with respect to the harmonised development of the national information infrastructure and the country-wide networking services built on that infrastructure. Similarly, the Association represents the Hungarian academic and research networking communities in national and international fora.

HUNGARNET has been established in 1992, as an independent Association. HUNGARNET is a registered, independent legal entity, without having any parent company/organisation. The Association is controlled by its General Assembly and has its President and Vice Presidents (Presidential Board), in accordance with the rules layed down by the Statutes. HUNGARNET collects a moderate membership fee from its organisational and individual members.

HUNGARNET closely co-operates with the bodies of the NIIF Program and with the NIIF Institute coordinating the development and operation of the infrastructure.

2. HUNGARNET - the Hungarian Research Network

In accordance with the international practice, the Hungarian academic and research network (ie. the information infrastructure serving the research and education community) as well as the NIIF Institute developing and operating it, are frequently referred to simply as "HUNGARNET", especially regarding the international relations of the NIIF activities.

As far as the network, denoted regularly by the name HUNGARNET, is concerned, it provides access for the related community to a wide range of national and international network services, based on the community’s country-wide private 10 Gbps backbone network, and the IP and e2e (10 Gbps each) international connectivity. In late 2006, about 700.000 users have been served within some 700 sites of more than 400 R&E organisations by HUNGARNET.
