Directory Service

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly version

directoryNIIF Directory Service (DS) provides a uniform way of storing data for employees and students of Hungarian higher education institutions as well as employees of research institutions. The data stored in DS and being protected by strictly-controlled access policies then allow the users to contact each other and to make their home credentials to be usable in other institutions as well.

For data networking services (HBONE) it is the Directory Service which stores authentication information about who is authorized to access the backbone network. Authenticating and authorizing users to access e-mail, web upload, dial-in and ADSL services are also performed by DS. The spectrum of DS-using services may vary in time as the number of NIIF services may also improve in the future.

NIIF Member Institutions can join DS in two fundamental ways:

  • On one hand entering to the current monolithic LDAP service, which basically means getting an installed LDAP server and getting hosted it at the nearest NIIF regional center. Provided that all articles of the Data Protection Law is held, data stored in regional LDAP servers are replicated to a central LDAP database.
  • On the other hand, a self-managed, redundant LDAP server can also be joined to NIIF DS by utilizing authentication-authorization federation links.
