Campus IPv6
Campus IPv6 project
The goal of the project called "Next generation services for Campuses with IPv6" is to examine the feasibility to introduce IPv6 enabled services in university campuses, and laboratories and remote access environment. The consortium will execute the necessary research and development in order to achive this. In the project we are planning to implement and use standardised or pre-standardised solutions, that provides efficient and long-term help for system administrators and users of universities, research insitutes, libraries, and public museums. The activity also covers the integration and development of IPv6 services. We are also paying attentions to security, manageabilty and ease of introduction of the services.
The basis of this extended services is IPv6 service provided by the NIIF backbone developed by NIIF IPv6 project. We are planning to extend IPv6 to DSL networks also.
The main components of the campus networks being developed during the project:
- Development of firewall systems based on the Securefilter system developed by KFKI-RMKI and other freely and commercially available ipv6 capable firewalls. Development of practical usage information IPv6 firewalls and securing IPv6 environment in Campuses.
- Developement of Network management solutions, using standardised flow-based solution, that efficiently can monitor the IP traffic flowing in campuses and betwwen campuses and NIIF backbone .
- Establishment of a federation based on the experiences of NIIF directory service to provide IPv6 enabled roaming and mobility support for NIIF users (teachers, researchers and students). Cooperation with Eduroam service.
- Production level grid services based on NIIF grid and IPv6 technology enabling real peer-to-peer grid interactions.
- Name and IP address management system to help system administrators to manage consistently the name and address assignments through DNS, DHCP and DHCPv6.
- IPv6 multicast and monitoring applications for IPv6 multicast: In the future multicast technology will be more widely adopted therefore integration and development of monitoring application is needed
- Application kits, recommendations and documentations that helps system administrators to deploy and integrate IPv6 services in their environments (web, levelezés, instant messaging, educational management systems etc.).
